How it works
How Gamegbee works
Gamegbee is Squid Mag's catalogue of games made in Africa or set here. It is a record in progress: 221 games documented so far, each with the sources behind it, and a public way to correct us.
What counts
A game is in when it was made in an African country, is set in one, or was made by someone from one, and a source says so. Each game page lists those ties under Where it comes from, each with its source. A game can belong to more than one country. Games tied to Africa as a whole or a region sit under Set across a region.
Where the facts come from
Store pages (Steam, the App Store, Google Play, itch.io), the games' own sites, the press, Squid Mag's archive, other directories such as Isakaba and Oya Jam, and posts by the makers themselves. Research tools help us find games; nothing goes up without a page a reader can check. Today 204 of 221 games have a checkable source for where they come from.
Dates
A release date comes from a store or a dated announcement and links to it. A first seen online date, marked *, is the earliest record of a browser game on the web, from the Internet Archive or a certificate log: it tells you the game existed by then. A planned date is the maker's own target and is never shown as released.
What we are still checking
Every game page has a How sure are we panel and, where it applies, a Still checking line. Squid's takes, country intros and the words on the weekly picks go live only once an editor approves them.
Art
Pictures come from the game's store page, press kit or own site, are credited to the maker, and stay up while we ask for permission. Makers who would rather we used something else, or nothing, can tell us and we will change it.
Codes
Every game has a code such as NG-25. The letters come from the country it was first filed under, and the number is given once and never changes, so a code always points to the same game, even when we learn more about where it comes from.
Corrections and new games
Use the add a game form for a new game, a correction or a better source. Makers and readers can both suggest games.
